Haymarket Hotel Picadilly, London
Tim & Kit Kemp

(page 52 issue 11)

Tim and Kit Kemp have now opened The Haymarket Hotel, their 7th London acquisition, part of the exclusive London Townhouse Hotel Group, Firmdale Hotels. Fusing contemporary and classical references in the heart of the West end, this landmark building was originally designed by John Nash, the master architect who developed most of Regency London, including Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, and the adjoining Haymarket Theatre.
Interiors, by Kit Kemp, pay tribute to the building’s noble lineage whilst updating it with a contemporary English point of view. The lobby is a welcoming, airy space featuring a large stainless steel sculpture by Tony Cragg and paintings by John Virtue. Grey oak dominates the lobby, library and conservatory while handpicked antiques and original art unite past and present. The Shooting Gallery is a particular highlight, 60 feet in length with 18 foot ceilings and de Gournay wallpaper featuring jungle landscapes in grey sepia tones.
50 guestrooms are individually furnished with custom-made pieces, evoking contrast and comfort at every level. Downstairs, a spectacular 55 foot long swimming pool awaits with a pewter bar and a spectacular lighting scheme using contrasts of light and shadow. The Brumus Restaurant & Bar serves modern English brasserie cuisine, boasts a dark oak and pewter top bar, a collection of original paintings by Peter Rocklin, and a life size bronze horse standing proudly in situ.
