The East Room (page
24 issue 12) The East Room opened for business in February 2008 in the urbanite mecca of Shoreditch and is the latest addition to the international group of bars and members’ clubs owned by Jonathan Downey, comprising Milk & Honey (London and New York), The Player (Soho) and The Clubhouse (Chamonix in the French Alps). The East Room is built in an east London Victorian warehouse and former photographic studio. The interior design concept, by Jonathan Maugham of Mango Plus architecture, highlights how this space has evolved over the decades, demonstrated by the Art deco ceilings, 1940s sash windows, 1950s carpets, bespoke leather banquettes, original Eames dining chairs alongside G-plan teak nests, rich rosewood cabinets, Murano chandeliers with 1960s & 70s continental classics. ‘Keeping it local’, Downey sourced the interior furnishings from the most renowned, retro places in Shoreditch and Islington. The East Room is described as a ‘new world wine room’ that re-invents the out-modish, English wine bar with an attitude to food and wine more accustomed to Melbourne or San Francisco than London. Celebrity wine expert, Matt Skinner, is Director of wine, lending it instant credibility. Apart from two champagnes, all of the wines at The East Room are from the southern hemisphere – Chile, Argentina, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. What are you waiting for?
